The St. James’ Organ

The St. James’ Organ
D. Leslie Smith, Organ Builder Opus 6 (2008)
Three Manuals and Pedal: 31 stops
Total Pipes: 2297

This organ originated as a 1913 Karn-Warren in the sanctuary of the now-closed Church of St. James-the-Apostle in Hamilton.  Although eleven of its voices are authentic to the original organ, and its matching Arts and Crafts style cases now house the Great and Solo divisions at the baptistery end of the church, with the exception of one pedal chest the entire mechanism is new and custom built for St. James.  The pre-existing Karn voices have been augmented by the addition of both new and vintage pipe work, including nine ranks of vintage wood and a rare free-reed Cor Anglais.

An unusual characteristic of the instrument, inspired by St. James’ famous acoustics, is its placement in four cases around the sanctuary: two at the Baptistery (south) end and two at the Chancel (north) end.  The effect is an organ re-imagined musically, to enfold the listener, to nurture the singing community and to reflect the colourful sights and diverse voices that make up this special place and its people.

The two-year project campaign was entitled “Craft, Wind and Music”: the pipe organ, perhaps best among man’s creations, exemplifies the union of art, craft and science, and is an ultimate expression of sacred beauty borne on the winds of song.
